The Cup that Cheers

Some days just don’t go well. You prang the car, fall out with a friend, sprain your ankle, annoy your boss, come home in a bad mood and trip over the cat. Whatever the problem, a cuppa can be the solution. Especially if it’s sweetened with kind words and served by someone who hears you out.

What if the bad days outweigh the good? It all seems too much, you’re struggling to cope, and you simply don’t know who to turn to.  A hot drink won’t solve your problems, but a Neighbourhood Mental Health Café might be just what you need. Whatever it is that’s getting you down, you can be sure of a welcome.

What kind of help is available? When things are getting on top of you, it can be difficult to know what you need. Whether it’s problems at work, unmanageable debts or relationship issues, a mental health café can help.

A private conversation with a support worker, engaging in wellbeing activities, sharing stories and tips, playing a board game or making a hot drink for someone else – all these simple things can be the first step to feeling better in yourself. While the staff are not doctors, nurses or therapists, they do have special training. They are good at listening, offering ways to reduce your immediate distress, keeping things confidential and navigating you to the right support.

Everyone takes their own journey at their own pace. Some people use the space to think about their problems and leave with a new perspective. Others return now and then for a little refreshment as they go through life’s ups and downs. Some make the sessions part of their routine, enjoying the peaceful moment they provide in an otherwise difficult life, while on waiting lists for other services or taking small steps towards recovery.
